What
are CKDs & CBDs
Certified
Kitchen Designers (CKDs) and (CBDs)
Certified Bath Designers, specialize in
the design, planning and execution of
kitchens, bathroom vanities and other built-in
units throughout the home. Only a select
group of expert designers attain the CKD
and CBD designation(s).
CKDs
and CBDs, while an integral part of the
interior design profession, are also
distinctly different because of their
specialization of practice. Similar to
general interior design practitioners,
CKDs and CBDs must meet common core
educational requirements, adhere to
various legal restrictions and
regulations in practice, and follow a
professional code of ethics. However,
beyond these basic core commonalties,
distinct differences exist because of
the nature of the space to be designed
and close relationship with the client.
The
planning of kitchen space
requires unique design skills and
knowledge because of the highly
technical nature of the equipment
incorporated into them, and the personal
way that this environment affects the
user. The CKD is competent
beyond the minimum interior design
qualifications of federal and state
(provincial) legal codes and
requirements. CKDs prove advanced
knowledge of technical and personal
communication skills required to succeed
as a design specialist in residential
kitchen, bathroom and other built-in
environments.

Joe Kassen, General Manager
“Creating a new kitchen involves more than
just hanging cabinetry on the wall.
Anyone can do that.
Kitchen designing and remodeling is about
building a space that really functions and adds
so much ease to your day, you never really stop
to think about it.”
As
General Manager, one of Joe’s primary
responsibilities is overseeing the installation
of each kitchen.
He knows that each kitchen is a work of
art, special to that homeowner, and he works for
ultimate satisfaction for the customer.
Joe
is a perfect example to show how the customer
today may have different kitchen needs than a
generation ago.
At home in the evenings, he enjoys being
in the kitchen as much as his wife, designer
Karen Kassen.
In fact, Joe is the perfect example of
the man who loves to cook.

Karen Kassen, CMKBD,
Allied ASID
Karen
Kassen was one of
the winners for the
2010 Caesarstone Design Competition, see the
article here:
Inspired Elements Unite in Winning Kitchen
Design
Karen Kassen, CMKBD, loves to design for clients
who really love to cook. One of the things she
enjoys most about designing kitchens, is the
number of past clients who return to her to
design kitchens in additional or second homes!
With over 14 years experience with Kitchens
Unlimited, Karen has found that her clients have
traditionally been so pleased with the total
kitchen redo experience, that they are not
hesitant to recommend her work to others or to
embark on a new kitchen themselves in another
home.
Karen has won the Sub-Zero Kitchen Design
contest for the Mid South Region. She has been
published in Signature Kitchens and Baths,
Memphis Magazine, Mid South, Interiors, American
Builder and Custom Home. Elite cabinet
manufacturer, Quality Custom Cabinetry, has also
used photos of Karen’s design work in their
sales literature. Karen recently became the only
kitchen designer in Memphis to receive the
accreditation of Certified Master Kitchen and
Bath Designer (CMKBD), the highest level of
recognition available in the industry. She joins
only two others in the state of Tennessee with
this accreditation.
“I like to design kitchens that not only look
great, but also perform well for my clients. I
design with the understanding that kitchens
should reflect a home’s character as well as my
client’s style”, says Karen. Working with Karen
and Kitchens Unlimited will assure clients that
they have exposure to the newest elements
available in kitchen design, and that they will
have a uniquely designed dream kitchen!

Jennifer Holt, Kitchen and Bath Design Assistant

Jennifer enjoys the
fulfillment that high end residential design
brings to her life. “The most rewarding part of
my job comes from pleasing our clients. Making
sure that they have a pleasant experience is
very important.” She supports Karen, CMKBD, in
all aspects of kitchen and bath design, as well
as in all areas of client relations.
Jennifer holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts
with a concentration in interior design from the
University of Memphis. Being an artist herself,
she appreciates art and its history. She likes
to use her knowledge of art history to assist
